Corinna Schemp, the FIA’s hugely popular head of European regulation, has passed away, prompting tributes from the industry.
The FIA issued a statement on Wednesday: “With profound sadness, the FIA team announces the loss of our beloved colleague, Corinna Schempp. No words can express our sorrow and grief.”
Schemp was with the FIA for 11 years, latterly as the lobby group’s head of European Union Policy and Regulation. She joined the trade body as its director of European regulation in 2014.
Before FIA, Schemp worked for three-and-a-half years at LCH after over five years in legal and regulatory affairs at LSE Group. She started her career as a legal associate at Fidelity International.
In her career, Schemp became a popular figure across the industry, working with FIA members and regulatory bodies on various pieces of European regulation. She was known for her forensic understanding of European policy and liked for her warm personality and quick wit.
The FIA led the tributes on Wednesday: “She could not walk down the street in London or Brussels without seeing someone she knew. She lived and breathed our markets and our industry. She devoted incredible time and attention to building relationships, mentoring young colleagues and encouraging all of us to live life to the fullest.”
FIA added: “She was a passionate and generous soul who loved people, her job and life. Our hearts feel empty without her. We will miss Corinna incredibly. And we bid her one last auf wiedersehen.”
Emma Davey, a former colleague the FIA and the chair of the board of trustees at Futures for Kids, wrote: “So very, very sorry to hear this news. Corinna was a wonderful colleague - so full of life, enthusiasm and energy. I know how missed she will be by her colleagues, FIA members and industry regulators alike. My condolences to Corinna’s friends and family. Her passing is a huge loss to all.”
Dr Tina Hasenpusch, the global head of clearing house operations and collateral management at CME Group, wrote on LinkedIn: “This is such sad and shocking news! Corinna was such a force of nature, always with a great big smile and a laugh at hand. Conversations with her were always profound and lighthearted at the same time. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and colleagues. She will be dearly missed!
Patrick Pearson, the former head of Financial Market Infrastructure and Derivatives at the European Commission wrote on LinkedIn: “Such sad news, Corinna was a ray of sunshine and always brought such kindness and energy. My condolences to her loved ones.”
