The event will include a keynote speech from KPMG's Dr Kay Swinburne and a panel featuring the regulator, banks and a trade repository
Global Investor Group will be hosting its Securities Financing Transaction Regulation (SFTR) web-conference on April 29, when our panellists will discuss what the industry has learned from the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (Emir) and highlight the challenges facing the industry.
The web-conference will feature a keynote speech from Dr Kay Swinburne of KPMG and an industry panel from the European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma), JP Morgan, BNP Paribas, UnaVista and Shearman & Sterling.
The first phase of Europe’s SFTR, originally due to go live on April 13, has been delayed until July 13, when both phases 1 and 2 will be implemented. Swinburne will discuss whether this delay has benefitted the industry, and underline the challenges the market is facing during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Emir provided a framework for SFTR reporting and, following greater consultation with the industry, SFTR implementation has been less disruptive but, despite many structural similarities with EMIR, there are distinct differences between the two regimes.
UnaVista’s product manager Catherine Talks explained: “While SFTR is an evolution of the existing regulatory landscape, it has some fundamental differences. The market has learnt from previous regulatory implementations and we are seeing new approaches.”
Due to the impending regime, many service providers have identified an opportunity to offer data enrichment services to support market participants in understanding what needs to be reported under SFTR.
Thomas Donegan, partner at Shearman & Sterling, added: “SFTR will bring in one of 2020's biggest changes in financial regulation, especially for repos and securities lending. I am looking forward to asking leading figures from ESMA, major banks and a trade repository about the main challenges they have seen and how best to address them.”
