Gallagher, a deputy director in the SEC’s division of trading and markets, has returned to private practice as a partner in the Washington, DC office of law firm WilmerHale.

Gallagher played an integral role in the SEC’s response to the financial crisis and other commission initiatives, such as overseeing issues arising from the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, rulemaking to address issues regarding credit rating agencies, and efforts to facilitate the central clearing of credit default swaps.

A week before Gallagher’s resignation, Firestone quit to become a partner in McDermott, Will & Emery in Washington.

He had worked for the US regulator for more than 12 years and most recently was associate director of the division of enforcement.

Robert Khuzami, director of the SEC’s division of enforcement, said: “his contributions to the division’s successes are many and he will be sorely missed.”
