The European Commission is set to publish its final standards on commodity position limits in the coming weeks
The US has had position limits --
quantitative thresholds for the maximum size of position that
can be held by an individual trader or firm – for
years now but they have only been applied to nine agricultural
contracts though the US regulator did try to extend the
coverage to 28 contracts including other ags, energy and metals
This prospect fell off the agenda in 2013
though there is always a chance it could come back if the next
chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission wants to
follow the lead set by Gary Gensler, the head of the US
regulator three years ago.
