Wednesday's news the European Commission has delayed
implementation of its sweeping European directive Mifid II by a
year but warned firms to use the extra time to ensure they are
ready for the new deadline.
The long-awaited decision on a delay has
drawn a line under months of speculation, with market participants now working to the new
deadline of January 3, 2018.
The Commission said on Wednesday morning
that the delay – which gives national competent
authorities and market participants an additional year to
ensure compliance - "is to take account of the exceptional
