Dark days for Indian commodities as opposition grows
The delicate position of commodity futures in India could be
set to come to a head shortly with the Abhijit Sen committee,
established to explore whether futures trading has fuelled
inflation, due to report its findings imminently, while
opponents of derivatives markets continue to emerge.
The committee has been exploring futures trading for 14 months,
massively exceeding its original three month report deadline,
and Sharad Pawar, Indias agriculture minister, said that
if a report is not produced by the end of April the government
will take a decision on the matter independently.
