The planned merger of Taiwan's two stock exchanges with
Taiwan Futures Exchange (Taifex) appears to be an attempt to
stop the country's financial markets falling further behind
others in Asia. Obervers say restrictions on Taiwanese
investments in mainland China will continue to restrict its
growth despite the merger, however.
Taiwan Stock Exchange's chairman, Gordon Chen, is reported
as saying that the combination of the three exchanges is "very
urgent", noting the importance of providing a "one-stop shop"
to attract overseas investors and stop Taiwanese companies from
