Tokyo Financial Exchange [TFX] has confirmed plans to launch
its first weather futures contracts, possibly by year end.
A TFX executive told FO Week that information on
the product will be officially released in late September. In
the past year, the exchange has been researching average
monthly temperature contracts covering Tokyo and Osaka (see
FO Week Vol 9 No 33). The contracts, pitched at
JPY100,000 ($910) per degree celsius, will be targeted at
insurance firms and corporations that have felt the impact of
Japan's increasingly volatile weather.
