Derivatives exchanges are making a push into event-driven
contracts, an area many see as the next frontier of futures and
Event-driven markets grabbed headlines last year when the
Pentagon's Policy Analysis Market was uncovered. Politicians
trashed and shut down the plan, which would have allowed
traders to place bets on terrorist attacks, assassinations and
other geo-political events.
There was an attempt to revive the market as a private
concern without government involvement recently. However, one
firm that was providing technology to the venture told FO
Week it has been scrapped. Separately, a UK-based version
of the idea called Terrorbet is slated to open in the fourth
quarter, according to its website.
